Gavin Turk<\/strong> (b 1967) is a British born, internationally renowned artist, who lives and works in London. He has pioneered many forms of contemporary British sculpture, including the painted bronze, the waxwork, the recycled art-historical icon and the use of rubbish in art.<\/p>\n

Turk\u2019s installations and sculptures deal with issues of authorship, authenticity and identity. Concerned with the \u2018myth\u2019 of the artist and ontological questioning. Turk\u2019s engagement with this modernist, avant-garde debate stretches back to the ready-mades of Marcel Duchamp.<\/p>\n

Revolving Love<\/em>\u00a0exists in a sea of reference; a playful take on Robert Indiana\u2019s iconic\u00a0LOVE\u00a0<\/em>letters (1964-), where the letter \u2018O\u2019 begins to topple over. Turk has exaggerated this effect, creating\u00a0LOVE<\/em>\u00a0letters that almost appear to spin 360-degrees.<\/p>\n

Printed in two colourways,\u00a0Revolving Love<\/em>\u00a0create a dizzying illusion inspired by Op Art, where the letters rotate and pulsate as the complimentary colours oscillate. The series also closely references Richard Hamilton\u2019s\u00a0Epiphany<\/em>\u00a0(1963-1989), with its ribald statement across the surface with the words, \u2018SLIP IT TO ME\u2019, as well as the stuttering colourways of Marcel Duchamp\u2019s\u00a0Fluttering Hearts<\/em>\u00a0(1961).<\/p>\n

The button-like shape of each edition \u2013 enhanced by the high-gloss varnish surface and embossing \u2013 can also be seen to reference Gavin Turk\u2019s infamous 1991 degree show sculpture, where he exhibited a glossy ceramic blue heritage plaque titled\u00a0Cave<\/em>.<\/p>\n
